Abstract

A lighter on which a pipe tamper or the like is mounted is characterised in that the pipe tamper (10) or the like is mounted pivotally on a ring (6) slipped over the lighter housing (1). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION This invention relates to a lighter on which a pipe tamper or similar implement is mounted.
Lighters combined with a pipe tamper are already known. In one known arrangement the tamper is mounted for displacement in a guide in the form of a sleeve in the lighter housing, the tamper enclosing the flint tube when in the retracted position. This known system is relatively complicated and requires special shaping of the housing, which is expensive to produce.
In another known arrangement, the lighter housing itself has a foot near one end, to act as a pipe tamper. However, when the pipe is tamped, the lighter housing itself is fouled with this construction, which in addition necessitates a very slim housing.
The object of this invention is to provide a pipe tamper which can be very easily connected to and released from lighters.
This is important particularly for disposable lighters so that the user can remove the pipe tamper after the old lighter is used up and before he throws it away, and fit it to the next lighter. The object of the invention is achieved very easily by mounting the pipe tamper or the like pivotally on a ring which is slipped over the lighter housing. The ring together with the pipe tamper or the like pivotally connected thereto is therefore simply slipped over the lighter housing and thus securely connected to the lighter.
In a very simple and yet secure form of connecting the tamper to the lighter housing by means of which it is also possible to compensate extensively for any tolerances and differences, the ring is open and resilient.
The ring resilience can be further increased if the tamper or the like embraces the ring by means of a resilient fork nearthe pivotable mounting. To enable the tamper to be readily connected to and separated from the ring, according to another feature of the invention the mounting for the fork is advantageously open on the outside.
To ensure that the tamper bears against the lighter housing with the minimum interference and yet securely, the tamper is advantageously adapted to the shape of the contour of the lighter housing and engaged in a recess in the lighter housing on the underside thereof.
The invention is described in detail below with reference to an exemplified embodiment illustrated in the drawings, but without being restricted to the exemplified embodiment.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lighter combined with a pipe tamper according to the invention, Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the lighter and Figure 3 is an enlarged-scale cross-section through the ring and the tamper near the mounting, the lighter housing being shown just symbolically.
The lighter illustrated comprises a housing 1 bearing a head 2. A knurled operating wheel 3 is used to drive the friction wheel and a press button 4 serves to open the gas valve. The flame height is adjustable via a lever 5.
A ring 6 formed with trunnions or the like 7,8 by stamping is slipped overthe lighter housing 1,the trunnions being either sleeve-shaped, as at 7, or pot-shaped as at 8. The pipe tamper 10 is fitted on the ring 6 before the latter is fitted on to the lighter body. The fork 9 of a pipe tamper 10 is pushed on to the trunnions 7, 8, openings 15 in the fork 9 being anchored in the trunnions 7,8 so that the tamper 10 is mounted pivotally on the sleeve 6.
The ring 6 is open at 11 on one side and is resilient.
The resilience is increased by the resilient action of the fork 9 so that when the ring 6 has been fitted on to the lighter it bears tightly against the lighter body 1. Secure abutment of the ring against the housing is obtained particularly if the lighter housing 1 is somewhat conical.
The pipe tamper 10 which is integral with the fork 9 is adapted to the shape of the contour of the lighter housing 1 and therefore bears snugly against this housing. A lug 12 engages in a recess 13 in the lighter housing 1 to fix the tamper.
Figure 1 also shows that a second pipe implement may be articulated on the ring 6 (14). Numerous modifications are possible without departing from the scope of the invention.
