Abstract

A package for one or more articles, comprises a piece (1) of sheet- form rigid or semi-rigid thermoplastic material, divided by a transverse fold line (2) into two portions, one or more cavities for receiving article(s) formed in at least one of the portions and a flange (3', 4') being left at each of the two opposite ends of the piece (1) which is foldable about the line (2) to bring the portions together and to bring one (3') of the flanges to partly cover the other flange (4') thereby to close the package. A sheet of flexible material (10) is fastenable to the flange (3') and releasably adhesively fastenable to a part of the flange (4'), when the package is closed, thereby to seal the package. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Packaging Field of the Invention The present invention relates to the packaging of articles.
Background of the Invention The present invention is a modification of the invention disclosed and claimed in our copending British Patent Application Nos. 44230/76 and 52310/76 (cognate) (Serial No.
Disclosure of the Invention In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a package for one or more articles, comprising a piece of sheet-form rigid or semirigid thermoplastic material, one or more transverse fold lines being formed in the piece of material so as to divide the piece of material into two or more portions, one or more cavities for receiving the one or more articles formed in at least one of the portions, a flange being left at least at each of the two opposite ends of the piece of material, the piece of material being foldable about the fold lines to bring the portions together and to bring one of the flanges to partly cover the other flange thereby to close the package, the package further comprising a sheet of flexible material fastenable to said one flange and releasably adhesively fastenable to a part of said other flange, which part is not covered by said one flange, when the package is closed, thereby to seal the package.
It will be appreciated that because of the sheet of flexible material is releasably fastenable to said other flange the package can be unsealed and opened, e.g. for inspection as desired.
Preferably, the sheet of flexible material, in addition to being releasably adhesively fastenable to said other flange, is releasably adhesively fastenable to said one flange.
The sheet of flexible material is conveniently constituted by a length of self-adhesive tape.
The sheet of flexible material may carry printed matter, e.g. graphic matter and a description of the contents of the package.
Preferably the piece of thermoplastic material is transparent so that the packaged article or articles are visible from the exterior of the package.
Preferably one or more of the cavities are formed in each portion. Preferably when the package is closed the or each cavity in each portion of the piece of thermoplastic material is in registry with the cavity or a respective one of the cavities in each other portion.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the piece of thermoplastic material has only one said transverse fold line and thus is divided into only two portions.
Brief Description of the Drawings A package embodying the invention is described below by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 shows a plan view of a piece of sheetform rigid or semi-rigid thermoplastic material moulded into shape to form part of a package according to the invention; Figure 2 is a section along line Il-Il of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a front view of a closed package comprising the piece of thermoplastic material of Figure 1; Figure 4 is a side view of the components of the package of Figure 3 during closure of the package.
Description of Preferred Embodiment Referring to Figures 1 to 2, a piece 1 of sheetform rigid or semi-rigid thermoplastic material has a fold line 2 dividing the piece of material into two portions 3 and 4 each defining two cavities 5 and including a flange 3' of intermediate width at one end of the piece, a wide flange 4' at the other end of the piece, and relatively narrow flanges 3' and 4" along the sides of the pieces, the flanges being contiguous with each other. Each cavity 5 is, in transverse section, semi-circular in shape.
The piece 1 is formed by moulding (as described in greater detail below) a single sheet of rigid or semi-rigid thermoplastic material to form the fold line 2 and the cavities 5 and to leave the flanges 3', 4', 3" and 4".
Two round type dry batteries (not shown) are placed, either during the moulding of the piece 1 or later, in the cavities of either the portion 3 or 4 and then the piece 1 is folded along the fold line 2 to bring the portions 3 and 4 together and to bring the flanges 3' and 4' together thereby to encase the batteries.
The flange 3' partly covers the flange 4' leaving a part of the flange 4' uncovered. To seal the package, a length of flexible self-adhesive tape 10 (as shown in Figures 3 and 4) is applied to the flange 3' and the uncovered part of the flange 4'. The tape 10 releasably adheres to the flanges 3' and 4' thereby sealing the package.
The tape can be peeled off either flange, normally the flange 4', to allow the package to be unsealed and opened as desired, and, after reclosing the package, can be reapplied to reseal the package.
The flange 4' may have a hole 3 for the purpose of suspending the package. The base of the package is substantially flat so that the package is capable of standing on its own base.
One method of forming the shaped piece 1 of thermoplastics material, comprises: (a) providing a source of supply of thermoplastics material in strip form; (b) advancing the strip of thermoplastics material into a shaping machine; (c) in the shaping machine, shaping the thermoplastics material by vacuum forming, pressure forming or thermoforming; and (d) trimming waste material from the shaped thermoplastic piece.
Small pins 11 and corresponding recesses 12 may be moulded into the thermoplastics piece 1.
When the flanges 3' and 4' are brought together, the pins 11 engage in the recesses 12 and ensure that the lateral edges of the two portions 3 and 4 of the thermoplastic piece 1 are in alignment prior to the application of the type 10.
The invention has been described above in relation to a package for round type batteries.
However, it will be appreciated that other articles may be packaged. The shape and size of the cavities 5 should be selected to correspond to the size and shape of such articles so that such articles are a close fit in the cavities in the closed and sealed package.
