Abstract

A holder for an abrasive strip 10 of emery-cloth or the like comprises a clamp body 1 with side lugs and an inclined front surface S. A rod 2 secured to the body 1 can fit into a handle or into a hand-held power tool. A bent tongue 6 with side lugs 6A and a bulged leaf spring 9 are both mounted on a pivot pin 5. An eccentric 8 with a lever 13 is mounted on a pivot pin 7. The strip 10 is fed round the tongue 6 as indicated by the arrows 11 and 12, and the lever 13 is moved in the direction of the arrow 14 so that the eccentric 8 causes the strip 10 and the tongue 6 to be clamped between spring 9 and the surface S. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION An abrasive strip holder This invention relates to an abrasive strip holder.
Abrasive strips of emery-cloth and sand-paper and other materials are widely used by home workers and in factories, and there have been many proposals for means to facilitate the holding and use of such strips.
The present invention is intended to provide an abrasive strip holder which can be of simple and economic construction and yet can offer various advantages in use.
According to the invention there is provided an abrasive strip holder comprising a clamp body with an inclined front surface, a bent tongue connected to a pivot pin to the clamp body and extending forwardly from and rearwardly over the inclined surface of the clamp body, with gaps one between the tongue and the said surface and one between the tongue and the said pivot pin, so that an abrasive Strip can extend through these gaps and under and over the tongue, and when the holder is in use the tongue acts as a lever whereby the strip is clamped between the tongue and the said surface.
In a particularly simple holder embodying the invention the strip and the tongue may be pressed on to the inclined surface by one of the user's fingers, and in a more elaborate holder there are mechanical means for clamping the strip and the tongue. Either of these holders can be used so that the tongue tends to pivot and increase the force by which the-strip is pressed against the inclined surface.
How the invention may be put into practice appears from the following description with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a first holder embodying the invention, Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the holder of Figure 1, and Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of a second holder embodying the invention.
The holder illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 comprises a clamp body 1 secured to a rod 2 which can be fixed in a handle or in a hand held power tool. The body 1 comprises apertured side lugs 3 and 4, and is formed with an inclined front surface- S.
A bent tongue 6 has apertured side lugs 6A and is mounted on a pivot pin 5. Also mounted on the pivot pin 5 is a bulged leaf spring 9.
Mounted on a pivot pin 7 is an eccentric 8 provided with a lever 1 3.
When the lever 1 3 is raised as in Figure 1 there are gaps, one between the tongue 6 and the surface 8 and one between the tongue 6 and the pin 5 so that the abrasive strip 10 can be fed around the tongue 6 as indicated by the arrows 11 and 12 in Figure 2. When the lever 13 is turned in the direction of the arrow 1 4 the lobe of the eccentric 8 engages and flattens the spring 9 and thereby clamps the strip 10 and the tongue 6 against the surface S.
The holder shown in Figure 3 comprises a clamp body 1 5 secured to a rod 2 and formed with an inclined front surface S and provided with apertured side lugs, between which a bent tongue 6 with side lugs 6A is mounted on a pivot pin 5.
An abrasive strip 10 can be placed around the tongue 6 and manually pressed against the surface S as indicated by the arrow 1 8. When the -undersurface 17 of the strip 10 is pressed against a workpiece the tongue 6 tends to turn about the pin 5 and increase the pressure which forces the strip 1 0 against the surface S.
It can be seen that with both the illustrated holders the tongue acts as a lever whereby the strip 10 is clamped between the tongue 6 and the inclined surface S.
The illustrated holders offer various advantages, for example the extending part of the tongue can be introduced into narrow spaces.
Various modifications may be introduced without departing from the invention, for example the lower surface of the extending part of the tongue 6 may be convex or concave.
1. An abrasive strip holder comprising a clamp body (1; 1 5) with an inclined front surface (S), a bent tongue (6) connected by a pivot pin (5) to the clamp body (1; 15) and extending forwardly from and rearwardly over the inclined surface of the clamp body (1; 15), with gaps one between the tongue (6) and the said surface (S) and one between the tongue (6) and the said pivot pin (5), so that an abrasive strip (10) can extend through these gaps and under and over the tongue (6), and when the holder is in use the tongue acts as a lever whereby the strip (1 0) is clamped between the tongue (6) and the said surface (S).
2. A holder according to Claim 1, comprising mechanical means (8, 9, 13) for exerting force to clamp the strip (10).
3. A holder according to Claim 2, wherein the said mechanical means comprises an eccentric (8) connected by a pivot pin (7) to the clamp body ; 1 5), and a non-planar leaf spring (9) pivotally mounted on the clamp body (1; 1 5) to be pressed towards the said inclined front surface (S) by means of the eccentric (8).
4. A holder according to Claim 3, wherein the leaf spring (9) is bulged towards the eccentric (8) and the latter acts to flatten the leaf spring (9).
5. An abrasive strip holder constructed and arranged substantially as described with reference to and as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 or Figure 3 of the accompanying drawings.
