Between the base member and the flange are secured jacks 28, 30, 34 by means of which the spacing between the runner 14 and the base member 12 can be adjusted and which can accommodate limited relative angular movement. Preferably the ends of the jacking members remote from the runner are secured to slotted clamping members 20 which are provided with fixing bolts 24 for attachment to the flange 15. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Adjustable Shuttering
The present invention relates to adjustable
shuttering which is particularly, but not
exclusively, intended for use in the on-site
concreting of floors.
Normal practice hitherto has been to pour
concrete floors in situ in areas bounded by steel
roadforms of channel section and of depth
appropriate to the depth of the floor to be
concreted. The use of roadforms is normally
adequate for laying floors to within the accuracy
laid down in the relevant British Standard codes
of practice. However, there is a requirement for the laying of high tolerance floors where the
required dimensional accuracy is within 1-2 mm
and it is difficult to lay such a floor by the use of
roadforms alone. It is an object of the invention to
provide a simple and inexpensive shuttering
system which can be employed to lay floors to
high dimensional accuracy even where there are
height and profile irregularities in the oversite,
base framework or other sub-base onto which the concrete is to be poured.
Broadly stated the invention provides an
adjustable shuttering member for temporary
attachment along an edge of an area to be
concreted comprising:
an elongate base member for fixing along a
side edge of the area to be concreted and having
a projecting flange;
a runner disposed generally parallel to the base
member and having a straight edge for defining the upper level of the poured concrete; and
a plurality of longitudinally spaced jacking
members each secured between the base
member and the flange and adapted to adjust the
spacing between the runner and the base
member and to retain the runner at a preadjusted
spacing during subsequent concreting.
The shuttering member described above has the advantage that it is simple to manufacture
and to assemble on site, that it can be transported
in knocked-down form and that it can be used
with existing roadforms. It accommodates not
only irregularity in overall level of the sub-base
but also profile irregularities because limited
angular movement between the base member
and the runner is possible.
In a further aspect the invention resides in the
use of the shutters for laying a concrete floor.
Other preferred aspects of the invention are
defined in the appended claims to which attention
is hereby directed.
An embodiment of the invention will now be
described, by way of example, only, with deference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of an area of floor which is to be concreted showing the
shuttering used;
Figure 2 is an end, partly sectioned view of the
top end of a shuttering member with the
adjustable runner in the retracted position.
Figure 3 is an end view of the shuttering member as in Figure 2 but with the adjustable runner fully extended; and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary back view of the top end of the shuttering member and runner.
In Figure 1, ain area 10 of floor to be concreted is bounded at its lateral edges by shuttering in the form of steel members, generally designated as
12 and of channel section, which in the concreting industry are called "road-forms".
Adjustable runners, generally designated as 14 and of steel angle section, are secured adjacent to the upper leg 1 5 of the roadforms 12, and the spacing of the horizontal leg 1 6 of a runner 14 from the underlying leg 1 5 of the roadform 12 is adjustable in accordance with the depth of the floor to be cast to compensate for irregularities in the floor base on which the roadform 12 is resting. The vertical leg 1 7 of the runner 14 faces towards the vertical face 13 of the roadform 14 and is directed approximateiy parallel thereto. If necessary, removable packing pieces can be inserted to close any gap between the lower tip of the vertical leg 1 7 and the upper horizontal leg 1 5 of the roadform.
The constructional details of the runners are apparent from Figures 2 to 4. In the normal instance the runners 14 will be sold in standard unit lengths of 1 metre or a whole number of metres and will have adjustable clamping elements secured thereto at regularly spaced intervals along their length. One of the clamping elements is shown. A clamp body 20 has a groove 22 dimensioned to receive the tip of the horizontal leg 1 5 of the roadform. The lower face of the clamp body is provided with fixing bolts 24 which protrude vertically into the groove 22 to engage the lower face of the roadform leg 1 5 and alignment bolts 26 in the side of the clamp body extend horizontally into the groove 22 to locate against the tip of the leg 15.The upper face of the clamp body 20 has welded thereto an internally threaded sleeve 28 which receives a threaded lower region of a lead screw 30 having an integrally formed adjustment nut 32 which may be turned by means of a spanner to rotate the lead screw. The cylindrical head of the lead screw above the adjustment nut 32 is smooth and is journalled in a sleeve member 34 welded to the inner face of the horizontal leg 1 6 of the runner.
The head of lead screw is formed with a circumferentiál groove 36 which is engaged by an allen screw 38 in the sleeve member 34, which retains the sleeve member 36 to the lead screw 30, removal of the allen screw 38 allowing the clamp body 20 and lead screw 30 to be dismantled from the runner 14. It will be seen that rotation of the nut 52 in either direction effects relative vertical movement between the adjustable runner 14 and the roadform 12.
Furthermore, differential movement of the screw jacks at opposite ends of the roadform allows limited angular movement between the runner and the roadform which is helpful in compensation for irregularities in the floor base.
