Description

SPECIFICATION Workbench Technical field of the invention The invention relates to a workbench comprising a work-top and a support structure for supporting the workbench on a floor or other substrate, the worktop and support structure being relatively pivotably interconnected and the support structure being movable between an erected position in which the work-top is substantially horizontal and a collapsed position in which the work-top and support structure are generally parallel.
Background art Portable workbenches of this kind are generally known in the art as may be seen, for example, in United Kingdom Patent Specification No. 1 267 032.
The support structures of such workbenches are, however, relatively complicated in design and consequently relatively expensive to manufacture and complicated to use.
Disclosure ofthe invention It is an object of the invention to provide an improved workbench which seeks to mitigate these disadvantages.
According to the invention there is provided a workbench comprising a work-top and a support structure for supporting the workbench on a floor or other substrate, the work-top and support structure being relatively pivotably interconnected, and the support structure being movable between an erected position in which the work-top is substantially horizontal and a collapsed position in which the work-top and support structure are generally parallel, characterised in that there is intermediate connecting means slidably connecting the work-top and the support structure for movement between the erected and collapsed positions.
The advantages which may be obtained due to the present invention consist particularly in the provision of a slide means which allows relatively simple construction and operation of mechanism for collapsing and erecting a workbench.
An embodiment of the invention is hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Brief description of the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a work-bench, in accordance with the invention, in a collapsed position; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the workbench of Figure 1 in a partly erected position; and Figure 3 is a perspective view of the workbench of Figures 1 and 2 in a fully erected position.
Best modes for carrying out the invention Aworkbench 1 has a work-top 2 comprising two parallel boards or plates 3 and 4, the plate 3 being narrower than the plate 4. The workbench 1 has a support structure 5 for supporting the work-bench 1 on a floor, the work-top 2 and support structure 5 being relatively pivotably interconnected by pivots 6, 7,8 and 9. The work-top 2 and support structure 5 also have intermediate slidable connection means 10 connecting them. Because of the pivotal and slidable connection means 10, the support structure 5 is movable between an erected position (Figure 3) in which the work-top 2 is substantially horizontal and a collapsed position (Figure 1) in which the work-top 2 and support structure 5 are generally parallel.
The work-top 2 has two parallel depending side cheeks 11 of metal which are secured at or adjacent respective opposite ends of the underside of the work-top 2.
The side cheeks 11 are generally of L-shape, the sort arm having a down-turned flange parallel with the long arm of the "L". Boits pass through the short arm into the plates 3 and 4 for securing the side cheeks and work-top together.
The support structure 5 comprises two pairs of legs 12 and 13. Each leg is of tubular metal and is pivoted near its top (as viewed) to a respective side cheek by a pivot bolt or pin 6,7,8 or 9. The front legs 14 and 15 of each pair of legs 12 and 13 are also connected to a respective side cheek 11 by the slidable connecting means 10 which comprises a bolt 16 passing through the leg 14 or 15 and through a curved blind slot 17 in the respective side cheek 11 and having a threaded end on which is mounted a wing nut 18. The front legs 14 and 19 and 15 and 20 of each pair of legs 12 and 13 are also connected by lockable brace means comprising a bar 21 with a blind slot 21' pivotably mounted on the rear leg 19 or 20 of each pair of legs and slidable in relation to a bolt 22 through the front leg 14 or 15. The bolt 22 carries a wing nut 23 for locking the brace means 21 firmly in position.
The legs 14 and 15 are also connected buy a panel or foot rail 24. The legs 19 and 20 are connected by a panel or foot rail 25. The legs diverge downwards from a position just below the pivot connection of the brace means 21 to give a wider support area at the base, where the support structure 5 rests on the floor.
To erect the workbench 1 from the Figure 1 to the Figure 3 position, first of all the four wing nuts 18 and 23 are slackened off.
The user of the workbench 1 stands in front of it with the upper or work surface of the work-top 2 facing him. The upper edge of the narrow board 3 and the lower edge of the wider board 4 are grasped and the whole work-top is turned upwards, with the rear legs 14 and 20 firmly on the ground so that the work-top pivots in the direction of the arrows X and Y (Figure 1). As it does so, the bolts 16 slide along their respective slots 17 from one end towards the other end, and the legs 14 and 15 swing out away from the rear legs 19 and 20. To accommodate this movement, the legs pivot in their pivot mountings, i.e. on bolts 6,7,8 and 9 and the bracing means pivots about bolts 22 and 26 to the horizontal position while the bolt stays at the one end of the slot 21' as shown in Figure 1.When the bolts 16 reach the opposite end of the slots 17 and are located in a dished recess 27 in the side cheeks 11 at the opposite end of the slots, the wing nuts 18 are tightened. The workbench 1 is now in the Figure 2 position. To fully erect the workbench 1 the rear legs 19 and 20 are pulled out by means of the panel, or foot rail 25, so that the two slots 21' slide along their respective bolts 22 which engage with dished recesses at the end of the slots 21 ' (Figure 3). The wing nuts 23 are then tightened firmly to lock the bolts 16 to the brace means 21, so bracing the support structure 5.
The workbench 1 is then ready for use for hammering, sawing, planing or any other work of a professional or "Do-it-yourself" nature. The workbench 1 can be used for mounting a vice member as it has holes through both plates 3 and 4. These holes 28 can receive a movable vice member and dogs, which may be ofthe kind shown in United Kingdom Patent Application No. 10338/78 for example.
To collapse the workbench for storage or transport, it is merely necessary to slacken off the four wing nuts 18 and 23 push the work-top downwardly, and then move the rear legs to lie along side the front legs.
The slots 17 are each quadrants but it will be understood that they would be of a different size providing the required pivotable movement is attainable and so that the work-top is generally horizontal in the erected (Figure 3) position. Also, though the slot 17 have been described as being in the side cheeks 11 it will equally well be understood that the front legs 14 and 15 could carry a slide block in which a lockable bolt carried by the side cheeks of the work-top could be slidably mounted.
Both ends of each slot 17 and of the slot 21 ' of each bracing means 21 have dished recesses for providing a firm and positive seating of the wing nuts in the locked position.
