Abstract

The block 1 is cast together with an adjacent upper part of the crankcase 2 and the coolant space 3 between the cylinder 4 and outer walls 5 is closed at the top of the block except for necessary coolant passages and open at the bottom prior to and thereafter closing by a plate 7. The metal or plastics plate 7 is connected to the block separably by screw means or inseparably by riveting or welding. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A Cylinder Block made of Die-Cast Light Metal This invention relates to a cylinder block, for an internal combustion engine, made together with an adjacent upper crankcase part of die-cast light metal, for example aluminium or magnesium alloy, and having a coolant space between the cylinders and the outer walls of the block.
For various reasons, particularly weight, there is a trend towards producing cylinder blocks for internal combustion engines from light metal. For the purpose, in addition to low-pressure casting of light metal, with which in a given time only a relatively small number of castings can be manufactured per production unit, the pressure die-casting process has been employed for some time, particularly for competitively priced small light-metal engines, the engine design being such that the water space in the block is left open towards the cylinder head, a seal being provided by the cylinder-head gasket.
Leaving the water space open towards the cylinder head gives rise in practice to sealing problems which, in the main, arise from the fuct that the upper part of the portion of the block which forms the cylinder or piston track is not rigidly held or anchored.
According to the present invention, in a cylinder block, for an internal combustion engine, made, with an adjacent crankcase upper part, of die-cast light metal and having a coolant space between the cylinder and outer walls of the block, the said space is closed, except for necessary coolant passages, in the plane of the joint with the cylinder head to be mounted on the block and is closed against the crankcase at its lower end, which is open during the casting process, at the level of the lower end of the cylinder by sealing means provided after completion of the casting.
Also, according to the invention, a method of producing, for an internal combustion engine, a cylinder block of light metal, comprises die casting the said block, together with an adjacent upper part of the crankcase, with a coolant space between the cylinder and outer walls of the block closed at the top of the block except for necessary coolant passages and open at the bottom and thereafter closing the said space at the bottom by a sealing means.
With a block in accordance with the invention, it is advantageous that the upper part of the portion of the part of the block which forms the cylinder is rigidly anchored so that sealing problems at this point no longer arise.
Hitherto, when the pressure die-casting method was employed, the water space of the cylinder block was left open at the top and closed at the bottom. This is attributable to the fact that, misunderstanding the sealing problems, designers used the gasket which had to be provided in any case to furnish an overall seal for the water space, while the generally irregular form of the block at the bottom deterred them from leaving the space open there because of the possibility of encountering sealing difficulties.
In an advantageous development of the invention, the sealing means may comprise a plate made of metal or a plastics material which is connected to the cylinder block separable, for example by adhesion or screw means, or inseparably, for example by riveting or welding.
One embodiment of the invention by way of example is illustrated in the accompanying drawing which is a section through a cylinder block with an adjacent upper crankcase part.
The cylinder block 1 with adjacent upper crankcase part 2 is made of light metal and produced by a die-casting process. The cooling water space 3 between the cylinder 4 and the outer walls 5 of the block is closed by the wall 6 below the joint plane with the cylinder head (not shown) to be mounted on the block. For the diecasting, the space 3 is left open at the lower end level with the lower end of the cylinder 4.
After the die-casting, the opening of the water space 3 is closed against the crankcase by a plate 7, for example of annular shape, which may be made of metal or synthetic plastics material and which is connected to the cylinder block separably by adhesion or screw means or inseparably by riveting or welding. As shown, the plate may have a bevelled edge set in a recess of complementary shape in the block 1.
