Abstract

A dispensing device for use in a vending machine which is provided with a coin-freed mechanism comprises a vertical support for a plurality of articles to be vended, said support being open at the bottom, drawer means 15 disposed beneath the vertical support so as to engage with the lowermost article in the stack in the support, said drawer means being arranged to move in a plane transverse to the vertical stack and including a pivoted plate 13, the arrangement being such that when the drawer is in its retracted position the lowermost article in the stack is supported by the drawer and when the drawer is moved to its open position the lowermost article in the stack is supported by the pivoted plate, said plate being arranged to pivot downwardly as the drawer moves towards it retracted position and thereby permit the lowermost article to fail beneath the drawer into a discharge chute. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Dispensing Devices This invention reiates to dispensing devices and more particularly concerns dispensing devices for use in a vending machine incorporating a coin-freed mechanism.
Such dispensing devices frequently incorporate a vertical support for a plurality of articles to be vended, the articles being arranged in a stack and frequently are visible to a purchaser. A drawer arrangement is provided beneath the vertical support and is controlled by a coin-freed mechanism and enables a user to withdraw the lowermost article in the vertical support and remove it from the drawer.
Such dispensing devices suffer from a number of disadvantages, however, particularly since the drawer extends from the vending machine to enable the customer to remove the purchased article.
According to one aspect of the present invention a dispensing device for use in a vending machine which is provided with a coin-freed mechanism comprises a vertical support for a plurality of articles to be vended, said support being open at the bottom, drawer means disposed beneath the vertical support so as to engage with the lowermost article in the stack in the support, said drawer means being arranged to move in a plane transverse to the vertical stack and including a pivoted plate, the arrangement being such that when the drawer is in its retracted position the lowermost article in the stack is supported by the drawer and when the drawer is moved to its open position the lowermost article in the stack is supported by the pivoted plate, said plate being arranged to pivot downwardly as the drawer moves towards its retracted position and thereby permit the lowermost article to fall beneath the drawer into a discharge chute.
Preferably the drawer runs on slide members which define the path of movement between the retracted position and the open position.
Preferably the pivoted plate is controlled by means of a cam follower which engages in a cam track in a side wail of the dispensing device.
Conveniently the side wall also supports the guide means for the drawer.
The dispensing device of the present invention has the particular advantage that the opening of the drawer does not provide the dispensed article but merely transfers the lowermost article to the pivoted plate which prevents the article entering the discharge chute. In order that the purchaser may obtain the purchased article the purchaser must return the drawer to its retracted position in which position the drawer supports the next lowermost article in the stack and the pivoted plate is moved downwardly relative to the drawer and permits the lowermost article to fall into the discharge chute. Thus it is not possible for the purchaser to obtain the purchased article and then leave the drawer open.
One particular form of the invention is described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a cross section of part of a dispensing device according to the invention with the drawer shown in its open position; Figure 2 is a cross section of the device shown in figure 1 with the drawer in the retracted position and Figure 3 is a cross section of the device shown in figure 1 with the drawer in an intermediate position.
The device comprises a vertical support 10 having a stack 11 of articles to be vended. The lowermost article 1 2 of the stack is shown in figure 1 supported by a pivoted plate 13 which is pivoted at 14 to a drawer 1 5 having a flange 1 6 into which the fingers of the purchaser can engage.
The drawer 1 5 moves transverse to the stack 11 along the horizontal guides 1 7 and the position of the plate 1 3 relative to the drawer 1 5 is controlled by the cam follower 1 8 attached to the plate 13 which engages in a cam track 1 9 in the side wall 20 of the device. Thus in the position shown in figure 1 the plate 13 is held in a horizontal position by virtue of the cam follower 1 8 engaging in a horizontal portion of the cam track 19. As can be seen in figure 1 the pivoted plate 13 is supporting the lowermost article 12 of the stack and the next lowermost article 21 is supported at one side by a projection 22 and at the other side by the lowermost article 1 2.
Thus at this position the purchaser has been able to pull the drawer which is released by means of a coin-freed mechanism (not shown) but he has still not obtained the article to be dispensed.
In order to obtain the article the purchaser must return the drawer to the position shown in figure 2. In this position the plate 1 3 has pivoted downwardly by virtue of the cam follower 18 engaging in the cam track 19 and the lowermost article 12 is allowed to slide between the retaining wall 23 into a discharge chute (not shown).
It can be seen that in this position the next lowermost article 21 is still supported at one end by the projection 22 and is supported at the other end by means of the drawer 15.
In order to obtain another article from the device it is necessary to operate the coin-freed mechanism so that the drawer 1 5 is released, the drawer then moves through the positions shown in figure 3 in which the lowermost article in the stack is supported at one end by the pivoted plate 13. Further opening of the drawer towards the position shown in figure 1 causes the lowermost article to slide to the left and thus be released from the support of the lowermost article 12 and become supported only on the surface of the plate 1 3. Movement of the other articles in the stack is prevented by the lowermost tip 24 of the vertical support 10.
It will be appreciated that the present invention provides an extremely simple dispensing device which overcomes the main disadvantages of the prior dispensing devices incorporating a drawer mechanism. Furthermore the device is relatively simple and can be constructed in a robust manner.
The dispensing device may be made from plastics, sheet metal or from wood or a combination of these materials.
