Abstract

In a refrigerator an expansion valve is opened and closed according to the temperature of the outlet 11 from an evaporation unit. A temperature sensor phial 12 is mounted on the outlet 11 by a strip of self-adhesive nylon fabric 14 which is wrapped around the phial and outlet and secured to itself. This provides an easy mounting even in difficult positions and also heat-insulates the phial which therefore follows more closely the temperature of the outlet. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Mounting Means This invention relates to mounting means for mounting a temperature-sensing device in intimate contact with an object the temperature of which it is desired to sense.
The invention provides mounting means for mounting a temperature-sensing device in intimate contact with an object the temperature of which it is desired to sense, the mounting means comprising a strip of flexible self-fastening fabric of a kind known per se, said strip being adapted to be wrapped tightly around the temperature-sensing device and the said object and secured to itself.
The flexible fastening fabric is of the kind described in Patent No. 987484 in which one surface is formed with closely spaced hooks and another surface is formed for said hooks to engage therein, e.g. by having loops.
Preferably the strip carries at one end a loop through which the other end may be passed.
According to another aspect the invention provides an assembly comprising a temperaturesensing device, an object the temperature of which is to be sensed, said device being in intimate contact with said object, and mounting means comprising a strip of flexible self-fastening fabric wrapped tightly around the device and object and secured to itself, said flexible fabric being of the kind described above.
According to another aspect the invention provides a method of mounting a temperaturesensing device in intimate contact with an object the temperature of which is to be sensed, the method comprising piacing the device in contact with the object, wrapping around the device and object a strip of flexible self-fastening fabric, tightening the fabric and securing it to itself.
Preferably the object is of cylindrical form and the device is also of cylindrical form but has a concave depression in one side which conforms to the surface of the object. The object may be the evaporator outlet of a refrigerator and the temperature-sensing device may control the opening and closing of an expansion valve in accordance with the sensed temperature.
A specific embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, which is a perspective view.
The device shown in the drawing is part of a refrigerating machine in which an expansion valve (not shown) is opened and closed in accordance with the temperature sensed at the outlet from an evaporation unit of the machine. An evaporator outlet tube is shown at 11, and has its temperature sensed by a sensor having a phial 12 connected by a capiilary tube 13 to an expansible chamber (not shown), charged with a liquid or liquid and vapour mixture. Increased sensed temperature causes the liquid charge to expand, which in turn causes the chamber to expand. The movement of the chamber is then translated directly or indirectly to open or close the valve.
For rapid sensing of the temperaturn of the evaporator outlet it is desirable that the phial 12 be intimately attached to it and that the phial be protected from outside temperature influences.
Moreover, the evaporator outlet may be in a position which is awkward for access so as easily mounted attachment is required.
According to this embodiment, the phial 12 has a concave side 12' which contacts the evaporator outlet 11, the phial being held by a strip of nylon fabric material 14. This material is of the kind known per sue and for instance as described in Patent Specification No. 987484 which is formed with one surface of small hooks which if pressed against a surface of loops engages therein reasonably securely. However, the surfaces may be disengaged by a ripping movement. Such materials are sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Velcro". It has one surface formed mainly of one kind, e.g. hooks, and has a small patch of the other kind, e.g. loops, attached thereto at 1 6. The strip of material 14 is wrapped around the phial and evaporator outlet and one end is passed through a metal loop 1 5 sewn into the other end.The free end is pulled in the direction of arrow A to tighten the material around the phial and outlet and then brought into contact with the patch 1 6 in the direction of arrow B. The contact area is pressed to engage the hooks and the assembly is thus complete.
It is found that the attachment can be made easily and quickly even in positions where access is difficult. The material 14 also acts as a heat insulation reducing extraneous heating or cooling of the phial which therefore takes up a temperature close to that of the outlet 11 . The material, being flexible, does not deteriorate under vibration conditions, and being nylon does not corrode. Moreover, the attachment can be undone by the ripping movement mentioned above and re-used without alteration.
