Abstract
For connecting together two textile (e.g. knitted) articles 1,2 in such a manner that the resultant seam has substantially identical appearance at both sides of the seamed articles, use is made of an eye needle 4 and a latch or hook needle 5 mounted on a common carrier 3, for movement in unison at one side of the articles 1, 2, and a loop taker 6 and a thread placer 7 mounted on a common holder 8 at the other side of the articles 1, 2. Dependant upon the direction of movement of the articles 1, 2, one of the needles produces a first seam which is overlaid by a second seam produced by the other needle. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Textile Linking or Seaming Machine
This invention relates to a textile linking or seaming machine, for connecting together two or more textile parts by two super imposed seams whose loops, produced by two stitch-forming tools which lie one behind the other with respect to the course of the seam, are disposed on opposite sides of the textile parts.
A machine of this kind is known from United
States Patent No. 2159688. The sewing needles of the linking machine described in this publication are arranged on opposite sides of a knitting-head needle disc or crown. They thus work against one another, i.e. the one needle works, related to the knitting-head needle disc or crown from the inside outwardly and the other one from the outside inwardly, so that the seam produced is given the desired appearance.
However, this known arrangement of the sewing needles requires a relatively complicated sewing needle drive. Also, the sewing location is accessible only with difficulty, since a needle and a loop-taker drive is necessary at each side of the articles being linked or seamed.
Furthermore, at each side of the articles being linked a specific minimum spacing of the corresponding sewing and looptaking tools is necessary.
The task of the invention is to provide a machine, of the kind described at the introduction hereto, with which seams can be produced which have the same appearance from both sides of the linked articles.
This problem is solved by the provision of a textile linking or seaming machine, for connecting together two or more textile parts by two superjacent seams whose loops, produced by two stitch-forming tools which lie one behind the other with respect to the course of the seam, are disposed on opposite sides of the textile parts, characterised in that both stitch-forming tools are arranged at one and the same side of the textile parts that are to be connected, and that one of the stitch-forming tools is an eye needle which cooperates in known manner with a loop-taker which is arranged at the other side of the textile parts whilst the other stitch-forming tool is a latch needle or hook needle which cooperates in similarly known manner with a thread placer which is arranged adjacent the loop-taker.
The principal advantage which can be achieved by the invention consists in the fact that the driving mechanism of such a machine needs only a relatively insignificant additional expenditure over and above that involved with a conventional machine having only one sewing needle. As compared with a machine having two sewing needles which penetrate the articles being linked or seamed from different sides, the constructional expenditure is considerably less. Because the loop takers for both needle systems are disposed at one side and are fastened to the same carrier, it is possible to fold the loop-taker carrier away and
thereby make the seqing location more
accessible.
A very simplified drive is achieved for the second sewing needle (i.e. the latch needle) and
of the associated thread placer if the eye needle together with the latch needle or hook needle,
and the loop-taker together with the thread placer, are fastened to respective carriers which are coupled with a suitable drive. One then also obtains the further advantage that accessibility to the immediate work region of the linking machine
is considerably improved.
The invention will be described further, by way
of example, with reference to the accompanying
drawing which the single figure is a detached view diagrammatically illustrating the immediate work region of a linking or seaming machine conforming to the invention.
Only those parts of the linking or seaming machine which are material to the invention are shown in the drawing. Textile parts 1 and 2, which are to be connected together, are transferred in known manner onto needles of a knitting-head needle disc or crown which, for the sake of simplicity, is not shown. Depending on the construction of the linking or seaming machine, a needle carriage 3, which is equipped with stitchforming tools and which can be moved forwards and backwards, is arranged either inside or outside the knitting-head needle disc or crown.
On the opposite side are disposed components which, jointlywith the stitch-forming tools, make possible the formation of the desired seam. In accordance with the invention, an eye needle 4 and a latch needle 5 are provided as the stitchforming tools. Instead of the latch needle 5, however, a hook needle may be used. A looptaker 6 cooperates with the eye needle 4, and a thread placer cooperates with the latch needle 5.
Just as the needles 4 and 5 are both mounted on a common carrier in the form of the carriage 3, so are the gripper 6 and the thread placer 7 fastened to a common holder 8. When the linking or seaming machine is in operation, an appropriate drive, to which the carriage 3 and holder 8 are coupled, causes the latter to carry out the movements which are necessary for proper seam formation.
As is evident from the drawing, assuming the rotary motion of the knitting-head needle disc or crown to be in the direction of the arrow 9, the latch needle 5 is disposed in front of the eye needle 4. Of course, the arrangement may be reversed if desired.
With the linking or seaming machine switched on, the latch needle 5 forms, from thread 10, a seam whose loops are disposed on that side of the textile parts 1, 2 which faces the latch needle 5. As soon as the seam produced in this way has been brought, by the rotary motion of the knittinghead needle disc or crown in the direction of the arrow 9, to the levei of the eye needle 4, the latter forms, from thread 11, a further seam which lies precisely on the already existing seam and whose loops are disposed at that side of the textile parts 1, 2 which is away from the eye needle 4. Since each seam is formed independently of the other it is not necessary to coordinate the movement of the elements, participating individually in the seam formation, with one another to any greater extent than has already previously been the case.
