Abstract

202,686. Herbert, Sir A., and Vernon, P. V. April 27, 1922. Perforating or dividing by fusion.-In an oxyacetylene or like. machine for cutting metal a slide which controls the movements of the blowpipe is mounted on a beam movable on one or more horizontal guideways at one or both sides of the machine, so that work of considerable size and length such as locomotive side frames, boiler plates, bridge members &c. may be cut at one setting. The guideways A, which may be vertically adjusted on two or more pillars A<2> by screws A<8> according to the thickness of the work, has rails A, A<5> to engage rollers B<2>, B<3>, B<4> on a carriage B<10> which is secured to or integral with a beam B, on which a slide B<5> is mounted. The slide B<5> carries a guide member C, which is rotated or rotatably adjustable about a vertical axis 0, and is provided with a slide E<4>. This slide E<4> may be connected directly to the blowpipe D as shown in Fig. 3, or through a second slide J on a second carriage J<3> provided with weighted cords J<5>, as shown in Fig. 1, and as described in Specification 202,687. In this form the slide E<4> is connected to the blowpipe by a link L and pillar L<2> which is coaxial with the blowpipe, and engages a template M as described in Specification 202,876. The slide E' may carry an arm E, in which the blowpipe is adjustable. the arm being rotated in the slide by a worm E<2> and worm wheel E<3>. The slides B<5>, E<4> are driven by a motor F through a belt F<2> and variable speed gear F<3>, the slide E<4> through shaft F<4>, gearing and feed screw C', and the slide B<5> through feed screws F<5> as described in Specification 202,687. Stops G may be used to stop the feed and cut off the blowpipe, flame automatically. Gas is supplied to the blowpipe from containers on a trolly D<5>. The work mav be supported on a table H, whch may be vertically adjusted instead of the guideway A. The table is mounted on trunnions supported by bearings H<2> so that it may be tilted by a handle H<16> through worm gear H<14>, H<15>. It may also be rotated by spur gear H<7>, H<8> and worm gear H<9>, H<10> from a shaft H" rotated either by hand or by spur gear and belts from a motor H<4>. In a modification the beam may be supported on guideways at both ends, each comprising a single rail having V-shaped sides.
