Abstract

A collapsible shopping bag (10), eg of woven nylon, has an umbrella cover (12) arranged at the bottom of the bag (10). When the bag (10) is in use, the cover (12) is capable of holding an umbrella (13), a double sided zip fastener (16) being provided for opening and closing the opening in the cover (12). When the shopping bag is not required, the cover (12) is reversed and the bag (10) collapsed and inserted in the cover, together with the umbrella (13). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to umbrella covers The invention relates to umbrella covers.
According to the invention there is provided a combined umbrella cover and collapsible shopping bag, means being provided for securing the collapsed shopping bag to the umbrella cover when not in use.
The invention further provides a combined umbrella cover and collapsible shopping bag, the cover having an elongate opening formed therein and being reversible between a first configuration and a second configuration and closable in either configuration by closure means, the shopping bag being of flexible material and extending from the cover, the arrangement being such that when the shopping bag is in use the cover is in the first configuration and is capable of enclosing an umbrella, the cover when reversed to the second configuration being capable of enclosing collapsed shopping bag and an umbrella.
The closure means preferably comprises a double sided zip fastener.
The cover is preferably arranged to be on the outside of the shopping bag, and preferably is adjacent or at the bottom of the shopping bag.
The cover preferably extends across the width of the bag.
The bag may have two handles.
The cover and bag may be of woven material, for example woven nylon.
The invention further provides a cover and a shopping bag according to the invention in combination with an umbrella. The umbrella may be a telescopic umbrella.
By way of example, one embodiment of a cover for an umbrella, and a shopping bag according to the invention, and the cover and shopping bag in combination with an umbrella will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view from below a cover and shopping bag ready for use with the cover partly enclosing an umbrella.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the cover reversed and partly enclosing an umbrella and the shopping bag collapsed, and Figure 3 is a perspective view of the cover fully closed.
As shown in Figure la a shopping bag 10 has two handles 11, and at the bottom of the shopping bag 10 a cover 12 is provided which is capable of enclosing an umbrella. Figure 1 shows the cover 12 partly enclosing an umbrella 13. The umbrella 13 has a telescopic shaft and shortenable ribs to allow the umbrella to be collapsed to the length of the cover 12.
The cover 12 comprises two panels 14, 15 joinable by a reversible zip fastener 16 operable from either side of the fastener by handles 17, 18 and base panel 19 of the shopping bag 10. Alternative closure means operable both when the cover is in the configuration of Figure 1 and in the reversed configuration of Figure 2 could be used. In the preferred embodiment shown, the side panels of the shopping bag 10 and the panels 14, 15 of the cover 12 are integrally formed and the base panel 19 of the bag 10 is sewn along a seam 20. It will be appreciated that other arrangements of panels could be used to provide the cover 12.
A handle in the form of a tab 21 of material is provided to allow a closed 12 to be conveniently carried.
The combined shopping bag 10 and cover 12 are of woven nylon material, although other suitable materials could be used.
When the shopping bag 10 is in use, the cover 12 can conveniently hold the umbrella 13 by fastening the panels 14, 15 with the fastener 16. The umbrella 13 may, of course, be omitted, for example if it is in use due to wet weather.
When the shopping bag 10 is not required, the cover 12 is capable of enclosing the umbrella 13 and the bag 10 folded or rolled up. In order to enclose the bag 10 in the cover 12, the fastener 16 is pulled back using the handle 17 to open the cover and the panels 14, 15 are reversed so that the base panel 19 is exposed at the bottom of the bag 10. the bag 10 is then folded, or more conveniently rolled around the umbrella 13 and inserted into the reversed cover 12.
The fastener 16 is then drawn across by pulling the handle 18 (Figure 2) until the cover completely encloses the umbrella and bag (Figure 3). In this state, the handle 21 is on the outside of the cover.
Again, the umbrella 13 may be omitted from the above operations if it is required due to, for example, wet weather.
The advantage of this embodiment of a shopping bag and umbrella cover are that a convenient cover, integral with the shopping bag, is provided for the umbrella when the shopping bag is in use, thereby reducing the risk of losing or forgetting the umbrella.
By a simple reversal of the cover, the shopping bag and the umbrella can be conveniently enclosed by the cover.
