Abstract

A fastener for a building service, the fastener comprising a flexible cable formed with a loop at each end. The loop may be adjustable and the cable may have a variety of fastening elements. A building service means a conductor of a supply on, in, to or from a building and includes a pipe, cable, cable tray, cable trunking, air duct or channel. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A building service fastener This invention relates to building service fasteners. The term "building service" when used in this specification means an elongate conductor of a supply on, in, to or from a building and includes a pipe, cable, cable tray, cable trunking, air duct or channel.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a building service fastener including a flexible cable formed with a loop at each end.
The flexible cable is conveniently plastics coated and preferably has a cable core of metal, plastics or natural fibre strands.
At least one loop may be passed through an eye or loop formed at one end of a threaded metal rod.
The flexible cable loop may be formed by placing one end of the flexible cable alongside the adjacent flexible cable length and crimping or contracting a metal band around the said flexible cable end and length.
The flexible cable may include a turnscrew or turnbuckle intermediate the ends thereof.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a pipe fastened by one of the aforementioned building services fasteners.
According to a further aspect of the invention an air duct is suspended by one of the aforementioned building service fasteners.
According to yet another aspect of the invention a cable laying in an elongate cable tray is fastened therein by one of the aforementioned building service fasteners.
The invention is described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is an elevation of a building service fastener, according to the invention, Figure 2 is a section along the line Il-Il in Figure 1, Figures 3, 4 and 5 show different embodiments of ends of building service fasteners, Figures 6,7,8,9 and 10 show embodiments of building service fasteners, Figure 11 shows cables fastened in a cable tray by a building service fastener according to the invention, and Figure 12 shows a modification of Figure 1.
The flexible cable be provided with a variety of attachments whereby the cable may be attached to the building service which it is to fasten orto the part of the building to which the building service is to be fastened.
In Figure 3 the loop 10 is threaded through a loop or eye 14 formed at the end of a threaded metal rod 15. Where appropriate, the threaded metal rod 15 may be screwed into the building service or the building part, or may be fastened thereto by nuts on the threaded metal rod 15.
Figure 4 shows an alternative fastener comprising a spring steel clip 16 having a central bend 17, through which the loop 10 passes, and outwardly turned ends 18. In use, the ends 18 are pressed towards each other and pushed through a hole in the building service or part. On release, the ends 18 separate to locate the clip 16.
Figure 5 shows an s-shaped spring steel clip having a bend 19 in which the loop 10 is fastened, and a bend 20 adapted to be sprung onto an edge of the building service or part.
Figure 6 shows a threaded metal rod, of the kind shown in Figure 3, with the central length 21 of the flexible cable threaded through the loop or eye 14.
Figure 7 shows a threaded metal bar 22 to each end of which the loops 10 are fastened, and in which the flexible cable in supported by two threaded rods 15.
In Figure 8 a pipe, cable or duct 23 of cylindrical cross-section is fastened to a flat building part 24 by a flexible cable of the kind described with reference to Figure 3, in which the threaded rods 15 are fastened through the building part 24, whereby the flex ible cable is tensioned.
Figure 9 shows a rectangular-section duct 25 supported by two flexible cables of which the adjacent loops 10 are joined by a link 26. The flexible cables may be tensioned by nuts on the threaded rods 15.
Figure 10 shows an alternative arrangement to Figure 9 in which the flexible cables are tensioned by a central turnscrew orturnbuckle 27 in place of the link 26.
In Figure 11 an elongate cable tray 28 has an array of cables 29 laid therein. The cables 29 are fastened in the cable tray 28 by a flexible cable, of which the threaded rods 15 are fastened through the cable tray 28, whereby to tension the flexible cable and fasten the cables 29. Clearly such an arrangement could be used to fasten to pipes or ducts in place of the cables 29.
In Figure 12 one loop 10 of the flexible cable is made adjustable in size or position by omitting one of the metal bands 12 and substituting a rigid plate of metal or the like having two holes through which the cable is a sliding fit, as shown, to form a toggle. Tension in the loop causes both limbs thereof to jam in the toggle holes, so that the toggle tries to lie parallel to the cable.
It will be apparent that a building service fastener in the form of a flexible cable, as described herein, can be used with various combinations of end fitting, as described in Figures 3,4 and 5, to support or fasten building services of different types to building parts in different ways.

Claims (11)
