Description
SPECIFICATION
Pivoted door assembly for a shower cabinet
This invention relates to a door assembly for a shower cabinet.
The invention provides a pivoted door assembly for a shower cabinet, in which the screen frame members and door frame members can be produced from profile members of small wall thicknesses, and the hinge members which define the pivotal axes can carry a high loading.
According to the present invention there is provided a door assembly for a shower cabinet, comprising a frame and a door pivoted to the frame, the frame members of said frame being connected together by first corner connectors and the door having a frame whose members are connected together by second corner connectors, said first corner connectors adjacent to one side edge of the door each being provided with a hinge pin and the second corner connectors at said one side edge of the door being provided with a cylindrical opening in which the adjacent hinge pin is engaged.
The overall construction of the pivoted door assembly according to the invention is greatly facilitated by virtue of the fact that no additional hinge members are required for the pivot mountings, but instead the pivot mountings are provided by a particular configuration of the corner connectors, which are disposed in the region of the pivot axes, for the door and the screen frame.
Even if profile members of small wall thicknesses are used for making the screen and door frame members, the pivot mountings can be of a construction capable of carrying a high loading, by virtue of the corresponding configuration of the corner connectors.
In an embodiment of the invention, the lower of the second corner connectors at one side edge of the door has downwardly extending wall portions which form a receiving groove for receiving a bead portion provided on the adjacent first corner connector of the frame, in the closed position of the door. In this embodiment, in the closed position of the door, a gap corresponding to the height of the bead portion is provided between the upper horizontal frame member of the door and the upper horizontal frame member of the screen frame.
If the door is moved out of its closed position, the wall limb portions of the lower corner connector of the door frame co-operate with the bead portion of the lower corner connector of the screen frame, so that the door is lifted.
The downward movement of the pivoted door on to the lower horizontal frame member in the closed position ensures that there is a good seal between the pivoted door and the lower frame member, to prevent the passage of spray water which is produced when a shower is taken. The sealing action can be further increased by the lower, horizontal door frame member having outwardly directed edge limb portions which partially overlap the screen frame member. Edge limb portions of this kind may also be provided on the upper horizontal member of the door frame and on the vertical frame members of the screen frame.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of an example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is an elevational view of a door assembly with two pivoted doors, for a shower cabinet,
Figure 2 is a view in cross-section taken along the line Il-Il indicated in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a view of part of Figure 1 on a larger scale and partly in vertical section,
Figure 4 is a view in cross-section taken along the line lV-IV indicated in Figure 3,
Figure 5 is a view in cross-section taken along the line V-V indicated in Figure 3,
Figure 6 is an elevational view of a corner connector of the screen frame,
Figure 7 is a view taken in the direction of arrow VII indicated in Figure 6,
Figure 8 is a view taken in the direction of arrow VIII indicated in Figure 6,
Figure 9 is a side view of a corner connector of the door frame,
Figure 10 is a view in cross-section taken along the line X-X indicated in Figure 9, and
Figure 1 1 is a view taken in the direction of arrow Xl indicated in Figure 9.
The illustrated pivoted door assembly for a shower cabinet has a frame 1 therearound, and two doors 2, 3. The vertical frame members 4 of the screen frame 1 are fixed in wall connection profile members 5. The members forming the screen frame 1 and the members forming the door frames are cut at their ends at a right-angle configuration and joined together at the corners by way of corner connectors 6 and 12 respectively.
The corner connectors 6 (Figures 6 to 8) of the screen frame 1 have a central portion 7 from which extend leg portions 8 and 9 on to which the ends of the frame members are fitted. The leg portion 9 carries a hinge pin 10 which engages into a cylindrical opening 11 in the adjacent corner connector 12 of the door frame. The ends of the door frame members 15 and 16 are secured to the leg portions 1 3 and 14 of the corner connector 12.
Figures 1 to 5 show the doors 2 and 3 in the closed position.
The corner connector 6 of the frame 1 has a bead portion 1 7 which, in the case of the lower corner connector, in the region of the pivot axis, engages into a receiving groove 18 in the corner connector 12 of the door frame, disposed thereabove, when the door is in the closed position.
The receiving groove 18 is defined by the wall limb portions 19 of the corner connector 12. The bead portion 1 7 is of an arcuately curved external shape.
In the closed position of the doors 2 and 3, a gap 22 which corresponds to the height of the bead portion 17 is formed between the upper horizontal door frame member 20 and the upper horizontal screen frame member 21.
The bead portion 17 and the receiving groove 18 extend on both sides of the hinge pin 10. When the door is moved towards the open position, the surface of the bead portion 17 forms a control surface for the wall limb portions 1 9 so that the door is raised in the course of the door-opening movement.
In the region of the hinge pin 10, the lower corner connector 12 of the door frame is provided with a detent groove 23 which extends transversely with respect to the receiving groove 18. After an angle of door opening movement of 900, the bead portion 17 engages into the groove 23 so that the door is held in the open position.
The vertical screen frame members 4 are provided with outwardly directed edge limb portions 24 at the side of the frame which is towards the doors 2 and 3. The horizontal frame members 16 and 21 of the door frame are also provided with outwardly directed edge limb portions 25, at the side which is towards the screen frame.
The doors 2 and 3 are provided with handles 26. Sealing strip members 29 and 30 are provided between the vertical, inward frame members 27 and 28 of the doors.
The described embodiment shows the provision of two doors but the frame 1 may be provided with only one door.
