Abstract

A jig is used for guidance in drilling a plurality of holes, on a vertical guide line on for example a door (4), an exact distance apart to receive a coat hook having two rear projections. The jig comprises a body portion (10) having a rear surface, a front surface, a first projection (14) extending from the rear surface for insertion in a first drilled hole and a second projection (16) which has a hollow, at least substantially annular, from enclosing a bore, extending from said front surface. The bore accepts a drill bit for producing a second hole in the door. The jig has top and bottom notches for aligning with a marked vertical line on the door. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to pattern means The invention relates to pattern means, particularly to a template for use in drilling a plurality of holes.
Whenever it is desired to drill more than one hole in a wall, panel, cladding or other surface under circumstances in which the distance between the centres of two adjacent holes must be exact, then difficulties arise with the accurate measuring and marking required. Moreover, where a hand-held drilling device is used, even if an accurate measurement is made it often requires skill on the part of the operator to drill the hole exactly on the required spot.
The invention therefore provides a pattern means for use in drilling a plurality of holes in a substrate, comprising a body portion having a rear surface and a front surface and a bore formed through said portion, a first projection extending from the rear surface and a second projection which has a hollow, at least substantially annular, form enclosing a cavity continuous with said bore, extending from said front surface.
Advantageously, the external diameter of the first projection is no greater than the internal diameter of the hollow projection.
The problem of correct positioning is particularly acute for a relatively unskilled person faced with the task not only of drilling adjacent holes at the correct distance but, for example, exactly one above the other, on a vertical line.
Advantageously, therefore, the body portion of the pattern means may include marks aligned with the centre of the two projections, said marks being further alignable with a guide line on the substrate.
Conveniently said marks may be V-shaped notches.
The invention also provides a method of measuring and locating the required position of a plurality of holes in a substrate at apre-determined distance one from another comprising the steps of drilling a first hole and inserting therein a first projection extending from a pattern means, comprising a body portion provided with said projection on one surface, a bore passing through the body portion at a location spaced from the projection by predetermined distance and on an opposite surface of the body portion a second, hollow, projection, a cavity of which is continuous with the bore in the body portion, positioning said second projection over the desired location of a second hole and drilling the second hole through the cavity.
The method may also include the steps of marking the substrate with a guide line and lining up marks provided on the pattern means with said guide line.
The invention will now be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. it will be understood that the description is given by way of example only and not by way of limitation.
In the drawings: Figure 1 shows a fragmentary view of a hollow door in which two holes are to be drilled; Figure 2 shows a pattern means in use according to the invention; Figures 3 and4 show a front elevational and longitudinal sectional view respectively of said pattern means; and Figures 5and 6 show a rear elevational view and a side view respectively.
A coat hook 2 is to be secured to a hollow dbor 4 which must be drilled at lines A and B to receive projections 6 and 8 of the hook.
The hook projection 6 is a cavity fixing device of the type described in British Patent No. 1,475,839, but may of course be any suitable fixing device integral with or separate from the article to be secured to the door. In the present example the second hook projection 8 is a locating projection extending from the rear surface of the hook 2 so as to prevent its rotation about the fixing device 6, in use.
However, it is essential that the two apertures to be drilled on lines A and B are the correct distance apart and visually desirable that the two apertures are exactly vertically in line.
A template 10 may therefore be used which comprises a body portion 12, having a locating projection portion 14 which is a substitute for the locating hook projection 8 Spaced lengthwise from the portion 14 by a distance equal to that between the centres of the required apertures is a hollow projection or boss 16 having a through bore or cavity 18.
A lower part of the body portion 12 bears a knurled or roughened surface 20 comprised of small protuberances 22. Two notches 24 and 26 formed at opposite ends of the portion 12 line up with the centres of the projection 14 and the boss 16.
The template may be used in the following manner.
Two apertures are required to be made in the door panel 4 having their centres on lines A and B respectively. A vertical guide line is drawn on the panel and the first aperture drilled on A. The projection 14 is then inserted in the aperture (Figure 2) and the notches 24 and 26 lined up with the vertical guide line. Holding the template very firmly by pressure on the roughened part 20, a second aperture is drilled through the bore 18 of the hollow boss 16. The template is then removed, the hook 2 placed against the door with the projection 8 positioned in the lower of the two apertures and screw (not shown) tightened up in the portion 6 received in the upper aperture.
It will be understood that the two apertures at A and B respectively are preferably of the same diameter, to minimise difficulties, and that the projection portions 8 and 14 have the same external diameter as the internal diameter of the apertures at A and B of the bore 18 of the boss 16.
Various modifications may be made within the scope of the invention.
