Abstract
202,440. Baader, R. May 29, 1922. Fish, dressing. - A machine for rolling herrings comprises a drum 2 in which the rolling - elements are disposed, a carriage: 41, slidable on a guide 50, which carries the slit, gutted and cleaned fish f individually to the drum 2, a pocketed conveyer 39 which delivers slices of cucumbers, onions, or other suitable matter through a shoot 40 on to the fish about to enter the drum, means for delivering spices on to the fish, and spiking and ejecting means. The drum 2 is secured to the frame, and has slots 68, 57, Fig. 7, for the introduction of the fish f and spikes g respectively. The rolling- elements comprise a rod 18, mounted on a revoluble sleeve 6, and a curved member 17, extending from the sleeve 7. A disc 14, having two notches for a spring-controlled pawl 13, and a gear-wheel 15 are mounted on the sleeve 6, and a disc 12, having a notch for a spring-controlled pawl 11, and an arm 65 are mounted on the sleeve 7. The members 17, 18 serve as grippers and are operated intermittently, singly or simultaneously, accordingly as the fish is to be fed between the grippers, rolled or spiked and ejected, by the engagement of a mutilated gear-wheel 16 and a projecting pin 66 thereon with the gearwheel 15 and the arms 65 respectively. When the fish is inserted between the members 17, 18 the wheel 15, being adjacent to a toothless part of the wheel 16, remains at rest. The teeth b then operate and move the gripper 18 towards the gripper 17 which is held stationary by the pawl 11. The members 17, 18 having gripped the fish, rotate in unison and the fish, being wound around them, is pressed by arcuate plates 3 spaced from the drum 2 by springs 4. The springs 4 are arranged so that the radial distance of each plate 3 decreases in the direction of rotation, the tightness of the rolling thereby being assured. The rolling been completed, the other toothless portion of the wheel 16 becomes adjacent to the wheel 15 and the grippers come to rest for spiking and ejecting. The teeth a then operate and, in conjunction with the arm 65 and pin 66, return the grippers to the receiving position. Spices, such as pepper seed, are supplied to the entering fish from a hopper 36, by means of a pocketed roller 35 and a channel 38. The spike magazine comprises two rollers 19, 20 having longitudinal grooves on their peripheries which receive spikes g from a hopper. The rollers 19, 20 are interconnected by gear wheels and are intermittently rotated by a pawl 30, on an arm 27 mounted on a disc 25, which engages notches in a disc 26. Another pawl prevents retrograde movement of the disc 26. The discs 25, 26 and interconnecting gear-wheels are perforated for the passage of the spikes g which are ejected into the fish by pushers 33, 34 carried on a s otted arm 55. The fish is ejected by a plunger 8 or the rod 5 which is pushed forward by a stop 58, on the wheel 16, contacting with a lever 6C connected by a rod 59 to a bell-crank lever 9, 10. The various parts of the apparatus are interconnected by levers.
