Abstract
A scraper for cleaning a conveyor belt comprises a scraper blade adapted, in use, to extend transversely of the surface of a belt to be scraped, spring means operable on the blade to urge the latter into engagement with the belt, and damper means to damp displacement, in use, of the spring means. The damper means is preferably hydraulic. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Belt Conveyor
This invention relates to scrapers for belt conveyors and to belt conveyors incorporating such scrapers.
The purpose of a belt scraper is of course to scrape from the material carrying surface of the belt any material being conveyed that tends to adhere to that surface after or during discharge.
In Specification 1,304,631 there is described a proposal for a tangentially disposed scraper located at a conveyor belt return drum, at a location at or above the axis of rotation of the drum. From the practical viewpoint, this scraper location is highly efficient and gives the advantage that material scraped from the surface of the belt falls with the bulk of the material discharged by the belt, to wherever the latter is being discharged. However, when a belt joint e.g.
comprising a plurality of belt fastening hooks, is encountered the scraper blade is displaced from the surface of the belt, and due to being spring loaded into engagement with the belt surface, strikes the latter. This results in noise problems that are particularly disturbing in underground installations.
According to a first aspect of the present invention a scraper for a conveyor belt comprises a scraper blade adapted, in use, to extend transversely of the surface of a belt to be scraped, spring means operable on the blade to urge the latter into engagement with the belt, and damper means to damp displacement, in use, of the spring means.
Thus, the incorporation of the damper means ensures that the blade is unable to strike the belt upon being disposed by a belt joint, but on the contrary is returned at relatively low speed to the belt surface.
Preferably, the damper means is hydraulic.
Thus, one hydraulic damper may be located at or towards each end of the blade. The latter may be loaded by coil or leaf springs. In the latter case, these may be located one at or towards each end of the blade. Preferably, the blade is located in a tangential disposition as described in
Specification 1 ,304,63 1, and the blade may be of synthetic plastics material, e.g. as disclosed in
Specification 1 ,5 1 5,061.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a belt conveyor incorporating a scraper as defined above.
The invention will now be further described in greater detail, by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a scraper in accordance with the present invention, located at a return drum of a belt conveyor;
Figure 2 is a plan view of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an end elevation of Figure 1.
in the drawings, a scraper 1 is mounted on support structure 2 of a belt conveyor 3, the latter incorporating a belt 4 passing around the periphery of a return drum 5, which separates a conveying run 6 from a return run 7.
The scraper 1 is provided with a scraper blade 8 extending transversely of the belt 4 and having a scraping edge 9 in contact at point 10 with the material carrying surface of the belt 4, which material is discharged by the belt 4 as the latter passes around the drum 5. The blade 8 has a length slightly exceeding the width of the belt and is provided at each end with a laterally projecting carrier arm 11 secured by bolts 12, by which arms 11 and the blade 8 is attached, beyond each end of the drum 5 to a spring support blade 13, clamping brackets 14 secured by bolts 1 5 clamping an interposed blade end 1 6 to a respective carrier arm 11.Each spring support blade 1 3 at its end remote from the blade 8, terminates in an eye 1 7 secured on a mounting bolt 1 8 carried by a mounting plate 1 9 attached by bolts 20 to the conveyor structure 2. The mounting plate 1 9 also carries a screw adjustable device 21 whereby the contact pressure between the blade 8 and the belt surface at the point 10 may be adjusted to suit particular operating conditions. Each mounting plate also provides an attachment point 22 for one end of a damper 23, preferably of the telescopic hydraulic type, the other end of each damper being secured at point 24 to a flange 25 of an adjacent clamping bracket 14.Provision of the dampers 23 ensures that, in service, after the blade 8 has been displaced away from the belt surface being scraped upon the displacement of a belt joint passing the point 10, the blade, under the infiuence of the spring support blades 13 and screw adjustable devices 21, is unable to strike the belt periphery to be scraped, but rather makes a more gradual return to a belt scraping location.
