Abstract
A tubular combustion chamber (1) provides a passageway for a flow of particle-bearing gas. Respective feed pipes (3, 4) introduce a) fuel gas and b) air and/or oxygen into the upstream end of the chamber (1). At least one of the feed pipes (3, 4) discharges its gas tangentially into the chamber (1), transversely to the incident particle- bearing gas, so as to cause swirling within the chamber. This allows efficient combustion for a wide range of gas ratios and particle concentrations. The particle-bearing gas may be introduced through a supply pipe (2) generally of the same diameter as the chamber (1) but having a narrow portion (2a) adjacent thereto. Thereby the gas velocity can be caused to exceed the velocity of the flame in the chamber (1), and striking back (when the particle-bearing gas is inflammable can be prevented). <IMAGE>
