Abstract

An apparatus for use in escaping from the upper floors of buildings includes a length of flexible metal strip (10) having one end a bracket (11) intended to be secured to a part of the building. A guide device (12) has the strip (10) extending through it and is provided with adjustable braking means (16 to 24) for gripping the strip (10). A harness (25, 26) is mounted on the guide device (12). In use, a person wearing the harness can control his rate of descent down the strip (10) hanging from the bracket (11) by adjusting the braking means. <IMAGE>
