Abstract

A codeable card comprises a plastics lamina 10 in which are embedded fibre optic links 11 which appear as one or more bundles 15 at one edge of the card and individual links 11 at the opposite and/or adjacent edges of the card. In the illustrated case, the links extend from the edge 13 to the opposite edge 14. Coding (which can be effected by the customer or user, in contrast to the manufacturer or supplier) is effected by interrupting, obscuring or omitting selected ones of the links 11, e.g by punching holes 16 through the card as shown, by forming slits through the card, or by foreshortening the links 11 at the edge 14. A reader for the card comprises a locator or stop 17 for locating the card accurately with the bundle(s) 15 accurately in register with a light source 18 and the links 11 at the edge 14 accurately in register with a sensor head 20 having sensors 20 for each link 11. <IMAGE>
