Abstract
A process of phosphate coating ferrous metal articles by immersing the article in a phosphate solution and intensely agitating the solution to the extent that cavitation takes place in the vicinity of the article. In the preferred process the cavitation of the solution is produced by passing the fluid through fluid discharging jets (10) each of which comprises an inlet chamber (11) for receiving the fluid under pressure, a middle cylindrical chamber (14) having tangentially directed inlets (16) from the inlet chamber, and a co-axial outlet bore (15) of smaller diameter than the middle chamber and through which the pressurised solution leaves the jet, the phosphate solution being forced through the jet to produce vortex flow in the outlet bore, the rate of flow being such as to produce cavitation in the emerging phosphate solution. <IMAGE>
