Abstract

A process for the conversion of a solid carbonaceous feed material in the presence of an alkali metal- containing catalyst into liquids and/or gases (e.g. in gasifier 32) in which particles containing alkali metal residues are produced wherein the particles are recovered and treated at a temperature of 121.2 to 360 DEG C (250 to 700 DEG F) in a treatment zone (64) with a calcium or magnesium- containing compound (added via line 65) in the presence of water and an added base (added via line 67). The resultant aqueous solution containing dissolved alkali metal compounds is separated (in 71) from the treated solids and recycled (via lines 58, 59, 62) to the conversion process where the alkali metal constituents serve as at least part of the alkali metal- containing catalyst. The aqueous solution preferably contacts the recovered particles (vessel 56) to dissolve therefrom at least some water soluble alkali metal compounds. Preferably, the base added (via 67) to the treatment zone is an alkali metal hydroxide obtained by water washing the treated solids from the treatment zone (64) in stepwise stages (82, 81, 73) operated countercurrently. <IMAGE>
