Abstract

Water-soluble monoazo dyes having the formula: <IMAGE> wherein R<1> represents hydrogen, halogen, nitro, cyano, alkyl, trifluoromethyl, -SO2R<6>, -CONR<7>R<8>, -SO2NR<7>R<8>, -SO3R<9>, -COOR<9> or -SO2NHSO2R<10>; R<2> represents hydrogen, halogen, nitro or optionally substituted alkyl, alkoxy or aryl; R<3> represents hydrogen, halogen, -SO3H, -SO2R<6>, -SO2NR<7>R<8> or optionally substituted alkyl; R<4> represents optionally substituted alkyl or aralkyl or acyl; R<5> represents hydrogen or -SO3H; R<6> represents optionally substituted alkyl, aryl or aralkyl; R<7> and R<8> each independently represents hydrogen or optionally substituted alkyl, aryl or aralkyl; R<9> represents hydrogen or optionally substituted alkyl, aryl or aralkyl, and R<10> represents optionally substituted alkyl or aryl or dialkylamino, the substituents being such that the dye molecule contains one or two acidic water-solubilising groups selected from sulpho, sulphato, carboxy and -SO2NHSO2R<10>, and the -OR<4> group being in the ortho or para position relative to the azo group. The dyes are applicable as acid dyes to natural and synthetic polyamide textiles.
