Abstract

A bulk receiving hopper 10 especially for vegetables such as potatoes comprises a pair of side walls 11, a base 12 and an open end 21. A conveyor system has a belt 16 which extends along the base and a belt 17 which extends upwardly at a relatively step angle of about 30 DEG towards the end of the hopper remote from the open end. The open end has a pair of hinged vehicle support ramps (20, Figure 2) and extensions of these ramps form platforms 22 disposed on either side of the conveyor belt 16 within the hopper. A loaded vehicle can be driven into the hopper and the vegetables deposited directly onto the conveyor without undergoing a substantial fall and hence with reduced risk of damage. The hopper may have retractable road wheels 18. The speed of the conveyor belts 5 may be electronically controlled. <IMAGE>
