Abstract
Apparatus for producing a lifting force and a directional thrust comprises a stator 12 having a rotor 10 mounted thereon provided with radially extending vanes 14. A prime mover is provided on the stator and is connected to the rotor for producing rotation thereof. A circular deflector 30 is disposed adjacent to the periphery of the vanes of the rotor and is arranged to direct the air flow created by rotation of the rotor so as to produce a lifting force. Sleeve valve means 32, 34 are provided on the stator to direct air flow from a particular point on the circumference of the rotor to produce a lateral thrust in addition to the lifting force. A diffuser assembly 46 is mounted for free rotation immediately beneath the rotor and is arranged to be driven by the air flow produced from the rotor 10 the diffuser assembly 46 being provided with vanes 52 which assist the production of the peripheral air flow and adds to the lifting force produced by the apparatus. <IMAGE>
