Abstract

A blown film process is disclosed, in which polyethylene film with a reduced transverse direction tear strength is produced. The process has a blow-up ratio in the range of 1.2:1 to 4:1 and a MD draw down ratio in the range of 2 to 60. The polyethylene is partially crosslinked and extruded into a film between 10 ???m and 100 ???m thick. The polyethylene before crosslinking has a density of between 0.940 g/cm<3> and 0.970 g/cm<3>, and a melt index of between 0.2 g/10 min and 15.0 g/10 min. The crosslinking should be sufficient to cause the film to have a substantial reduction in the Elmendorf tear strength in the transverse direction as against a film made under the same conditions using the same polyethylene not crosslinked. Any known crosslinking method may be used, examples of methods and sufficient doses are disclosed, as are preferred ranges for other variables.
