Abstract

In apparatus for dispensing seeds a capture element 12 is driven in a cycle of movement in which it dips into a reservoir 13 of seeds suspended in water, captures a seed on a capture orifice 15 of the capture element 12 by means of suction applied to a conduit 14 leading to the capture orifice 15, moves from the seed reservoir 13 to release location 23, and releases the seed by application of a pulse of water to the said conduit 14. The suction is applied continuously to the conduit 14 leading to the capture orifice 15, and release of the seed is achieved by applying a pulse of water sufficient to overcome the applied suction. In a preferred form the seed reservoir includes flow means for supplying an upwardly directed flow of water in the seed reservoir 13 carrying a stream of seeds upwardly towards the surface of the water for capture by the capture orifice 15. The method and apparatus may be used for dispensing discrete objects other than seeds, may be used for dispensing objects in a dry state, and may be used to dispense more than a single object at a time. <IMAGE>
