Abstract

A pipe-line "inspection pig" consists of a drive unit 11 adapted to move through the pipe-line under the influence of fluid flowing in the pipe-line, a test-sensor carrier 12 and an instrumentation carrier 13 towed by the drive unit. The test sensors may be ultrasonic probes 16 arranged in circular array on a support 18 preferably rotatably mounted on a carrier body co-axially with the pipe-line axis. The ultrasonic probes are arranged within respective wheels which run on the pipe-line wall along mutually parallel paths which may define a helical configuration dependent upon the oblique setting of the axes of the wheels with respect to the pipe-line axis. Instrumentation (Fig. 2, not shown) monitors and records rotational and axial displacement through the pipe-line and relates this information to recorded probe signal data. The plurality of ultrasonic probes in circular array in conjunction with the proposed helical configuration of their paths permits the recording of a greater quantity of test information than is available with previous proposals. The provision of an opening in a drive surface of the drive unit allows sustaining of fluid flow in the pipe-line in the event of the inspection pig jamming in the pipe-line. In one embodiment (Figs. 4, 5 not shown), radially retractable test- sensor-carrying segments operate to retract automatically after a present time delay in the event of jamming in the pipe-line. <IMAGE>
