Abstract

Novel phenoxyalkyl-, thiophenoxyalkyl- and pyridyl- oxyalkyl-silanes of formula <IMAGE> wherein R<1> is -NH2, NR<4>H, NR2<4>, -CHO, -CN, -COR, Cl, Br, I, -SO2R<4>, -SOR<4>, -NO2, -SR<4> or -OR<4>, R<2> is a methylene group or an alkylene group containing 3 to 12 carbon atoms, each of R<3> and R<4> is selected from alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkaryl and aralkyl groups, any alkyl group present in R<3> and R<4> containing 1 to 12 carbon atoms, and Z is oxygen or sulphur, are prepared by reacting substantially equimolar amounts of an alkali metal phenoxide, thiophenoxide or pyridyloxide with a silane of formula XR<2>Si(OR<3>)3, where x is halogen, under anhydrous conditions in the presence of a dipolar aprotic solvent and a liquid hydrocarbon. The silanes are useful as coupling agents for glass fibre- reinforced composites, as flocculating agents for water purification and as sizes for glass fibres or fabrics.
