Abstract

An anti-jack knifing device comprises a square socket 12 in a socket structure 11 rotatably mounted on a tractor part of an articulated vehicle, with a flange on the socket structure having a toothed rim 15. In one embodiment the flange meshes with a toothed segment 16, the cusps of which are attached to the ends of respective rams 19. In a second embodiment, a chain passes around the flange, and a moveable sprocket to each side of the flange, and the chain is fixed at each end. Each sprocket is mounted on the end of a respective ram. In each case the rams are operated to damp any movement of the socket structure. The cylinders 21 of the rams are interconnected through a valve V which is progressively closed as the brakes of the vehicle are applied. <IMAGE>
