A cutting element for use on metal or rock consists of a cutting portion (2) and a supporting portion (3) is formed by cutting out a sector from a cylindrical body comprising a core of cutting material and a shell of supporting material, the shell enclosing the cove at least the periphery thereof. <IMAGE>
