Abstract

A counterbore having indexable inserts for counterboring metal machining comprises a shaft (3) and a cutting body (4) having wings (12, 13) projecting on opposite sides of the central axis a, at least one indexable insert being carried by each of the wings (12, 13) in corresponding recesses (20) in the front surface (17) close to the front edge (21). The cutting body (4) is designed to provide a maximum chip space in that each wing (12, 13) has uniform thickness at said end surface or in that its thickness decreases to the periphery of the wing at said end surface, and the ratio between the distance between the rear edges (23) of the wings (12, 13), taken along a reference line x extending perpendicularly to the central axis a of the counterbore and intersecting at right angles a line y to which the wings are parallel and the distance between the peripheral side surfaces (19) of the wings, taken along the line is less than 1:1.70 and preferably is within the range of from 1:1.75 to 2.40. <IMAGE>
