Abstract
The sequences of energising signals that determine the energisation pattern of the windings of a multiphase stepper motor are generated by a central processing unit and applied to the windings via data latches and appropriate amplifiers. As well as delivering these energising signals, the central processor also sends control signals to a control unit for a power regulating unit in the energising signal channel. The power regulating unit is controlled to pulse-width-modulates the energising signals and thereby vary the power applied to the motor to suit changing conditions or requirements of operation. A monitoring unit is associated with the motor to monitor its physical and electrical environment and send signals relating to, for example, winding temperatures to the central processor.
