Abstract

A resistor (R3) and an integrating circuit (R4, C2) are connected to the output of a full wave rectifier (D1 to D4). A light emitting diode (D6) is coupled between resistor (R3) and the capacitor (C2) of the integrating circuit. The light emitting diode is optically coupled to a light sensor (Q1) coupled into a triac control circuit. The time constant of the integrating circuit is chosen such that the still rising capacitor potential exceeds the falling potential across the resistor (R3) just before the zero crossing point of input line voltage to the rectifier. Both diodes D5, D6 then conduct to operate the triac as the input voltage approaches zero, operation just after zero-crossing being impossible with the correct time constant. The circuit is used for firing a triac in a lamp supply circuit and ensures that the initial lamp brightness and average current are low. <IMAGE>
