Abstract

A surveyor's staff comprises telescopic sections (A, B, C) each of rectangular section and means (M, M') for releasably locking them at chosen positions of extension. A scale is continuous on one side of the staff from top to bottom, when the staff is fully extended, but an oppositely-running scale is marked on the opposite side of the topmost section (A). A datum height can be established by viewing a mark at the top of the central section (B), adjusting section (B) relative to section (C), and thereafter departures from the datum height can be read off the scale on the uppermost section (A). In an alternative embodiment of the invention the sections are not of constant cross-sectional area, and a rack on one section is engaged by a pinion on another to effect mutual adjustment. <IMAGE>
