Abstract

A magnetic lock and key wherein magnetic elements (31, 32) of the lock are movable by a magnetic field of the key (16) along respective channels (33, 34) which extend around an axis of the lock and the elements overlap each other along the axis. Each channel is formed partly in a barrel and partly in a sleeve surrounding and splined to the barrel. An opening (40) or (41) is provided in the sleeve in one wall of each channel, and on insertion of the key the magnetic elements (31, 32) are each moved around to a position opposite the respective opening. The key may now be turned, and the barrel and the sleeve must turn with it; simultaneously, the sleeve is constrained by a cam mechanism (not shown) to move, progressively, perpendicularly to the plane of the drawing, openings (40, 41) progressively covering magnetic elements (31, 32) respectively. <IMAGE>
