Abstract
A process for the preparation of beta -lactam antibiotics that are derivatives of clavulanic acid is described. The azido derivatives of clavulanic acid (I> <IMAGE> wherein R is a carboxyl or esterified or salified carboxyl group are prepared by reacting an ester of clavulanic acid with a source of azide ions, a trivalent phosphorus reagent, for example a triaryl phosphine, and an azodicarbonyl reagent such as a dialkylazodicarboxylate or azodiaroyl, followed optionally by deesterification and salification. Reaction to form the azide takes place in one step and provides yields much improved over known reactions.
