Abstract

A distance relay determines the impedance of a line section by effectively calculating the ratio of the Fourier transforms (evaluated for a particular time interval T1-T2 and frequency omega e) of (i) the line voltage Vr and (ii) the current that would flow if the line voltage were equal to Vr during the interval T1-T2 and equal to zero at all other times. This second quantity cannot be sensed directly but can be derived from the Fourier transform of the actual line current Ir. The digital relay described separately evaluates the resistive and reactive components of the impedance for both phase-phase and phase-earth faults, repeating the evaluation continuously for new periods T1-Y2.
