Abstract

A cross-beam for a hoist has two adjacent double T beams standing on edge to form two adjacent I beams 2 and formed in opposing ends of the cross-beam are longitudinal recesses 1 in which load blocks 5 are supported. These recesses are positioned substantially in the region of the neutral axis of the cross-beam and the load blocks are each supported by a spindle 8 which is mounted in a bearing 7 and slidably movable in runners 4 so that the load blocks may be spaced apart from one another by differing amounts. An uppermost part (when in use) of the recesses is open by an amount sufficient to allow insertion of a load block. In a preferred embodiment each load block is connected by two hangers 9 to a lifting eye 6 and an elongate slot 13 is formed in each hanger where it is supported on a lug 14 of the runner and a stop 10 is mounted on each hanger which in operation co-operates with an upper boundary of the recesses. Thus, when the lifting eye contacts the ground there is some vertical freedom of movement for the lifting eye so as to thereby reduce damage to the spindle upon which the load block is mounted. <IMAGE>
