Abstract

A landing device for use in athletics and more particularly for use in high jump, pole vaulting or the like includes a sheet of flexible material (14) suspended in a substantially horizontal, extended configuration, above the ground. The device further has the characteristic that the sheet (14) is suspended in a resiliently damped manner to reduce the bouncing of an athlete when landing upon the device. Furthermore the landing characteristics of the device are adjustable to suit different athletes while the height of the sheet of material is also adjustable according to the height of the cross-bar over which an athlete attempts to jump. <IMAGE>
