Abstract

A process for the production of a fluorobenzonitrile containing one or more fluorine atoms attached to ring carbon atoms involves heating the corresponding chlorobenzonitrile with an alkali metal fluoride in sulpholane at a temperature between 220 DEG and 250 DEG C. Preferably the molar ratio of sulpholane to chlorobenzonitrile is between 1:1 and 6:1.
