Abstract

The use of MoSi2 as a ceramic cement is described. The cement is used to join separate components of ceramic materials e.g. of sintered silicon carbide to form a composite article. The components are positioned so that the surfaces to be joined are contiguous. Molten MoSi2 is added under inert conditions at above 2030 DEG C to fill the space between the components. Upon solidifying, a composite ceramic article is obtained. The cement may contain a wax binder e.g. polyethylene glycol or polyvinyl alcohol, paraffin or methyl cellulose.
