Abstract

A process for making paper or cardboard, which process includes the step of adding to the papermaking materials at any stage during the process prior the formation of the sheet of paper or cardboard, a basic salt of formula: Mn(OH)mX3n-m (I> wherein M is a tri- or polyvalent metal, X is Cl, NO3 or CH3COO, each of n and m is a positive number such that 3n - m>0 and the ratio (m/3n)x100 (basicity) is from 30 to 75%; the said basic salt optionally containing, in addition, a polyvalent anion Y selected from the anions of sulphuric, phosphoric, polyphosphoric, silicic, chromic, bichromic, carboxylic and sulphonic acids, the ratio Y/ M being from 0.015 to 0.4. Basic salts in which M is Al, X is Cl and Y is SO4 are preferred. The process leads to a considerable reduction in the suspended matter in the aqueous effluent of the papermaking process.
