Abstract

In the removal of dust from a sulphur dioxide-containing dust-laden gas stream the gas stream is conditioned by converting sulphur dioxide into sulphur trioxide by the action of a plasma; and the gas, containing the resulting sulphur trioxide, is passed through an electro- precipitator 12. The plasma may be produced in a plasma generator 14 by subjecting nitrogen to electric discharge to produce active atoms, which form sulphur trioxide through the intermediate step of forming active oxygen by reaction with nitric oxide in the gas to be cleaned; or an oxygen plasma may be used. The sulphur dioxide content of the gas may be further reduced by introducing additional plasma downstream of the electro- precipitator 12 and removing the resultant sulphur trioxide in an acid mist electro-precipitator; in a modification of this process, the first electro-precipitator 12 is replaced by a bag filter. A portion of the gas may be recycled from downstream to upstream of precipitator 12. The plasma generator includes an arc rotated by a polyphase A.C. field, thereby spinning and mixing the plasma. <IMAGE>
