Abstract

A video disc player which extracts a disc 36 and a disc-retaining spine 38 from a cover 30 on insertion of a disc caddy 14, has means 62, 82, 88 to sense and indicate which way up the caddy is inserted to thereby indicate which side of the disc will be played. A wedge 48 on the spine 38 pivots a sensor 62 upwards or downwards according to whether side one or side two of the disc is upwards so that a lamp 82 or 88 is lit, sensor 62 being located adjacent one side of a loading slot 12 (Figs. 1, 6) so that side identification is effected before the caddy 14 is fully inserted. Alternatively side one, side two and player-empty lamps 93, 97, 75 may be selectively illuminated by microswitches 53, 79, 87 located at the rear of the player to sense a notch 57 in the spine 38 (Figs. 8, 9), or a lever 103 sensing notch 57 may move a shutter 109 to selectively uncover side one, side two or player-empty 115, 117, 113 (Fig. 10). <IMAGE>
