Abstract
An electrode is prepared by plating on an electrode substrate (1), preferably by a dispersion coating method, a metal layer (2) of Ni, Co and/or Ag containing partially exposed porous particles (3) of Ni, Co and/or Ag on the electrode substrate. If desired, a middle layer (4) e.g. of Ni, Co, Ag and/or Cu is formed between the electrode substrate and the metal layer. The porous particles can be formed by removing a second metal component, e.g. Al, Zn, Mg, Si, Sb or Sn, from an alloy thereof with Ni, Co and/or Ag. The electrode can be used as cathode for electrolysis of an aqueous metal chloride using a diaphragm or an ion-exchange membrane. The substrate may be of Ti, Zr, Fe(alloy), Ni(alloy), V, Mo, Cu(alloy), Ag, Mn, Pt Group metal, graphite or Cr(alloy). <IMAGE>
