Abstract

In a rack and pinion steering gear having means for effective automatic compensation of backlash arising during service, the backlash compensating means includes a resiliently loaded member 37 co- operating with a cam surface 29 provided on a part 17 of the steering gear carrying the rack member 18 and the automatic compensation is preferably effective in the straight- ahead or neutral steering position. The member 37 tends to cause rotation of the rack member 17 about its longitudinal axis thereby causing the region 34 of the rack 18 to penetrate more deeply into the tooth segment 19. <IMAGE>
