Abstract

A mechanical excavator comprises a boom (10) mounted on a support part for rotation about a first horizontal axis (11), a dipper arm pivotally connected to the boom for rotation about a second axis (16), an excavating tool at one end of the dipper arm, means to cause pivotal movement of the boom (10) relative to the support part and of the dipper arm relative to the boom (10), the boom (10) comprising a base part (30) and a beam part (31) bearing means comprising a pair of parallel channel section guide means (38), (39) spaced apart transversely of the direction of relative movement between the boom parts (30), (31), provided on one boom part (30) and having slidably engaged therein opposed flange parts (41) of the other boom part (31) which permit sliding movement between said parts (30), (31), to vary the distance between said first and second axes (11), (16) and at least one wedge member adapted to be moved into wedging engagement between the boom parts (30), (31). <IMAGE>
