Abstract

A visual display device for teaching symbol recognition has first and second arrays 1, 2, of individually selectable light sources with first and second transparent overlays bearing like families of symbols but with the positions of the symbols in the second overlay scrambled relatively to the first overlay. Means are provided whereby a light source in the first array is selected and whereby the light sources in the second array are selected in a scanning sequence. The scanning sequence is interrupted by the pupil to indicate what he thinks is a symbol-match in the two overlays. If the pupil selects a correct match a first audible indication is given. If an error is made a second audible indication is given and the addresses of the selected light sources in the two arrays are stored in an error-memory. The light sources concerned can be subsequently energised with the aid of the error-memory. A comparator in conjunction with the address registers selecting the light-sources and a patch- board manually set to associate appropriate light sources of the two arrays depending on the overlays used, determines the indications given and the storing of errors in the error- memory. <IMAGE>
