Abstract

Elongate agricultural products P, such as carrots, are topped by a method and apparatus in which they are taken from feedstock V in which they are randomly orientated and conveyed by a first conveyor 11, having orientating means 13 which aligns the products parallel to the direction of travel of the conveyor, to a second conveyor 2 comprising to one or more pairs of conveying elements, the elements in each pair being separated by a gap of predetermined width. The products P fall between the elements and those of sufficient width at their widest point are supported by the elements at two diametrically opposed points so that they assume a vertical orientation under gravity. A pressing mechanism 5 ensures tight engagement of the products by the elements after which a top projecting portion of the product is cut at a station 6 by a pair of disc-shaped cutting members. <IMAGE>
