Abstract

In order to display a second programme picture inset in a first programme picture the receiver has a tuner which is switched to the second programme during alternate periods (131, 152; 171, 192) in alternate lines (13, 15, 17, 19). The switching frequency is 1.5 times the line frequency and so is inaudible via the loudspeaker. The second programme signals are stored, and are read out at a fast rate when the display scan reaches the inset region. Each displayed line of the second programme is formed of signals received in one period (e.g. 131) of one line and in the other period (e.g. 152) of the next but one line. During the whole of each line during which the tuner is switched to the second programme a substitute video signal, e.g. grey, is displayed. <IMAGE>
